I really like ideas 2 & 3. I think if there's a different way to make being a lawyer a shameful profession, perhaps that would be better. I'm not sure I want to see some folks without shirts. Idea 4, if it inspires and motivates, that's good, but if it only enhances greed, then not so much. I'd want to balance that with cooperative & collaborative events where you only win if you help others.
Hi Kelly, great point. My original 8 ideas contain one that says "Adding Wealth and Kindness to the American Credo of Freedom." I think desire for wealth needs to be coupled with being a positive to others and the world.
Though I am high school kid in India, I am planning my future in either London or the US and I completely agree with all your ideas. Desperately waiting for Part 2.
I genuinely admire how you just talk out your thoughts in its raw yet decent form.
If I want some personal advice from Jia(you) then how should I contact you? Like can you provide your email if possible?
Really appreciate your initiative to personally reply to your readers. In my moment of low, just you showing gratitude reminded that hope is everlasting.
Jia, I’m 100% behind you on 2&3. Have you thought about presenting a similarly cheeky series on personal finance? We and our kids clearly didn’t get enough of that content in HS/college.
If you do decide to write a part 2, an idea of a world that doesnt use the us dollar as currency would be interesting. Maybe something that has a fixed supply, that cant be seized or controlled, thats backed by millions of computers all over the world which makes it the strongest network in history, digital money that has no need for third parties aka the banks. You know, blackrocks highest performing etf, that thing that Trumps statue is holding outside of the white house, that thing that Strategys been buying since 2020, starts with a b...
Herb. Bitcoin started out as an idea with profound utilities, the one you've listed. I am not sure it's serving its original purpose nowadays. It's more or less just like another men-made asset class that doesn't have intrinsic value, like gold or dollar.
Coming back to this. I loved it funny and thought provoking …and found myself thinking about your next edition “four more ideas”……I think a year of service after high school/college —working for no pay in service of others.. paying it back, leaning into empathy and gratitude—-perhaps then you can also work on other life skills- like the financial planning, how to cook, clean, sew, garden — I did a year like that with Jesuit Volunteer Corp - and it was life changing.
Eat whatever you want for Thanksgiving! I recommend smoked turkey, it’s great. This year we had Japanese food including homemade sushi. Folks in Maine eat lobster. I approve of duck, but we’re probably not gonna do it.
What do you call a boat full of lawyers at the bottom of the ocean? A pretty good start! I agree you have spotted a problem, obviously the dress code is not going to work. I’m thinking mass murder. Or kidnapping?
We used to teach kids about money in school, the class was called “Home Economics.” It was basically adulting.
Saw this on LinkedIn that kind of aligns with idea 2 (High School AP Personal Finance Classes)
Requiring personal finance education for high school graduation is a good start.

That's a great start on the state level. I still think elite colleges making it AP eligible will be a much bigger catalyst.

PS - I'm in the horrified camp.

Love this article, your best and funniest yet (and engaging/informative). As an attorney who works out and wears suits/shirts, I say “bring it”!
Ken, you should look GREAT as a shirtless lawyer.
I vote for all the four proposals! Especially #3!

Hi Di, I used to blog about an idea of "Love Investor". Investing in companies I love.
